Target Overview
Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1; UniProt P01033) is a 207-amino-acid secreted glycoprotein that binds and inhibits matrix metalloproteinases via a 1:1 stoichiometric complex with the enzyme catalytic site. TIMP-1 preferentially inhibits soluble MMPs (MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-7, MMP-9) and has additional MMP-independent activities including erythroid-potentiating activity and anti-apoptotic signaling via CD63/integrinβ1. Serum and tissue TIMP-1 levels are elevated in cancer, fibrosis, and cardiovascular disease.
