Kallikrein-7 (KLK7, UniProt P49862), also known as stratum corneum chymotryptic enzyme (hSCCE) or serine protease 6, is a secreted serine protease (EC 3.4.21.117) that plays a central role in desquamation, the continuous shedding of dead corneocytes from the skin surface. KLK7 catalyzes the degradation of intercellular cohesive structures in the cornified layer through its chymotryptic activity, showing specificity for substrates with aromatic residues at the P1 position. Background
